If you are interested, tonight's Nova on PBS is about the Chauvet prehistoric cave in the Ardeche. Only time the French govt. allowed photography within it. Absolutely beautiful cave drawings! And magnificent in size. Those of us who cherish our visits to the Perigord with all its prehistoric wonders will enjoy this episode.
That was a wonderful episode. The cave painter managed to convey the motion of the animals. It was a very sophisticated technique when you consider how long ago it was.
the cave replica near the original cave is excellent. Similar to the Lascaux recreations done with the same materials and techniques as the original. We bought photo placemats with the cave drawings and just love them -- the drawings are wonderful. The replica even replicates the evidence of cave bears found in the original cave.
The 3D film Cave of Forgotten Dreams filmed the cave and its drawings and it is quite wonderful and is fine without 3D capability although it is wonderful to see it in a theater with 3D -- you are right there as the photographer moves through the cave.
We visited the Chauvet replica a few years ago. I actually enjoyed it more than the Lascaux replica - possibly because it felt more like a cave since it had stalactites/ stalagmites. The surrounding area is also much more dramatic scenery. Lascaux and Font de Gaume were dry caves. Peche Merle also has the stalactites/ stalagmites.
I saw this episode last evening. So interesting and loved hearing it described through artists interpretations. Ancient techniques that teach today. Early animation…showing movement, depth and how colors were applied. Wow…I would love to visit!
The Ardeche gorge is just beautiful. I alas had my arm in a cast from a fall in Rocquebrune and so could not kayak under the arch or swimg, but it would be heaven to canoe on the river under that great arch just below the original cave. The recreated cave is excellent but the views along the gorge getting there are also stunning.
