Chauvet cave

Any opinions out there about your personal experiences visiting this reproduced prehistoric cave?

Don't know about Chauvet but I was reluctant to go to Lascaux II since it wasn't the real thing. I'm sure glad I went - it was magnificent! Got to see Font de Gaume on the same trip so I did see an original - they were 2 different experiences, but each was wonderful. I'd say, go!

Hi from Wisconsin,
I don't know where you will be in France. Peche Merle is a great cave that is really spectacular on two levels. First the cave it self. Nice. then the paintings are so good they were used in Jacob Bronwski's, The Ascent of Man book and video series. No reservations needed, at least when we went.

This is the real cave. I visited the imitation they have in Madrid and boy was that terrible. They have a mirror on a table so you don't have to look up to see the fake paintings.

Wayner was unusually lucky getting into Pech Merle without a reservation. When my husband went, loads of people were waiting around hoping there would be no shows so they could take their place.

We're going to Chauvet next summer. It's supposed to be an excellent reproduction.
