Chateau Versailles

Just tried to book Versailles tickets on official site. Sadly tours for 16 July (tomorrow) are all booked out. Option, to get there very early or, as suggested by Versailles Ticket Office, try another Tour Company. They would not make any recommendations.
Would like to do a whole day, self guided tour.
Could anyone offer suggestion as to where I can pre purchase tickets?
Thanking you in anticipation!!

We just visited on the 13th. Bought only the timed English tour online at the Versailles website, and combined it with our Museum Pass. Show up and skip the line by heading for the guided tour entrance, and after your tour you can complete your visit inside on your own.

Thank you for that info however the Versailles website just advised (30 minutes ago) that I couldn't book tickets as they were sold out!! I think you are talking about the official site which is where I tried.
As to the Museum Pass - where did you purchase that?
Thanks again.

If you are looking for a timed entry ticket for the 16th, there is an option: buy the Kings Apartments Tour 1pm in English along with a general admission to the Chateau. When you arrive, go to the entry area for this tour, and you will not have to stand in the general line. However you will need to go through the security line, so do arrive early. Kings Apartments Tour

This is a great tour, and afterwards you can see the rest of the Chateau on your own.

We bought only the Guided Tour of the King’s Apartments from the official website (there are still some available for the 16th). We bought our 48-hour Museum Pass at the Louvre the day before (you can also buy at Musée d’Orsay), so no need to buy entrance tickets to the Palace. We used the Museum Pass for a few places around Paris. Our guided tour tickets were at 2pm so we went to the guided tour entrance at 1:45, with our tour tickets plus our Museum Pass.

PS we went through security as part of our tour group on the 13th. We did not have to go through any lines at Versailles prior to showing up in the guided tour office. And, there was also no line to buy Museum Passes at the Louvre (in a tobacco shop near the underground entrance)

Paris Museum Pass can be bought at any site that uses it -- we found no lines at Cluny or at Invalides (two separate trips.)

You may also be able to buy the Museum Pass at a Tabac near your lodging. Many sell them and it’s very easy to purchase in one.

I would go with the Museum Pass and tour the gardens first, then do the Chateau around 4 - we did this back in June, and had a straight walk-in to the chateau on a Thursday. Good luck!
