Chateau Beynac - where to park?

Where's the best place to park, to see Chateau Beynac and to walk around the village?

It has been a few years since we were in Beynac and it was in September so there were no crowds. My recollection is that we did not have any parking problems. There is some parking up by the chateau and to see the town, there is parking on the road that leads north out of town. The Chateau Beynac is ok, but the place we really found interesting and beautifully maintained is the nearby Chateau des Milandes which is a couple miles away on the other side of the river. It is a 15th century manor house once owned by Josephine Baker and has an interesting story.

This April we parked at the bottom of the cute village (big pay lot) and asked at the TI -- they said there was "some" parking at the top that we "might" be able to use, but ample parking part way up for a walk to the castle. The walk was ... a taxing climb up cobblestone stairs (note that I am 70+ and non-athletic) We did see about 20 parking spaces just opposite the castle entrance, most of them taken.

We were there last June. There is parking along side the river at the base of town. Or if you wish you can park near the castle up the main road. Never had any issues with parking. Enjoy, Beynac and the Dordogne are magnificent. We spent a great week there. This year we are heading to Provence. Happy travels!

If you get a chance, consider visiting the Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle a little further south from Beynac along the river. This was the rival castle to Beynac held by the English (I think). It's pretty interesting as well and easier to get to with easier parking.

We were just there this past Sunday, 3 days ago. There are 2 parking lots at the top, one maybe 20 cars very near the castle entrance and another maybe 50 meters from the first holding somewhere between 40-50 cars I’d estimate. The day we were there was of course low season and a bit windy and chilly which may have discouraged visitors. No one had any trouble finding a space at the top. The parking tickets are good in all town lots so when we were done up top we parked for a while at the bottom and walked around the lower part of the village. I can imagine on nice days in summer that parking will not be so easy.
