Chateau BB in Loire Valley

On our way to Burgundy we will be stopping for one or two nights in the Loire Valley. We will be traveling in late September (2015). Where we do not necessarily need to see any more chateaus/castles I do want to see the gardens at Villandry so we are open to any part of the area: have a car, 2 adults in their late 50's, enjoy meeting people over a good food and wine and where we travel economically this is worthy of a splurge if the right opportunity presents itself. We will be in France 3 weeks total (in Paris out Lyon).

Also any recommendations for villages and accommodations in the Burgundy area to make a home base.
Merci!

We just stayed at Les Manor Les Minimes in Amboise. Great place, nice breakfast, free parking, 3 minute walk to town with a super view of the Amboise Chateau and the river.

I'd stay in Chinon, which is closer to Villandry than Amboise. It's also a charming old town with perhaps fewer tourists than Amboise. The "forteresse royale" in the town is just a bunch of castle ruins, so I'd skip it. We stayed at Hotel Diderot -- charming hotel with courtyard, lots of roses, and quirky owners (you'll hear lots about their homemade jams). The gardens at Villandry live up to their reputation--who knew lentil plants could look so good? Also consider some wine tasting, as you'll be in the heart of the Loire wine country.

Only because you said you were open to a splurge, I'll mention Château de Marçay, near Chinon. It's not overwhelming luxury, but it has considerable charm, is very quiet, and the bathrooms were all new and luxurious. At a much lower price (I think), the very different but just as authentic Château de la Chatonnière. The latter has special attractions for contemporary gardeners, especially during tomato or dahlia season. It is very close to Tours. Do check for other reviews, maybe on TripAdvisor.
