Chartres - hotellerie st. Yves

We are looking for a hotel for a group of family members traveling to France for a wedding in June 2018. We need a location that is easy for a person with limited walking ability to walk to restaurants. We are considering hotellerie St Yves. We are looking for feedback on the suitability of this hotel for walking to restaurants (any suggestions?) Also would like to know about walkability to train station. Thanks

The Hôtellerie Saint-Yves is beautiful and located right next to the cathedral. But it is not close to the train station. To me it feels more like a hostel than a hotel.

My favorite hotels are the following

Le Boeuf Couronné - it’s about a 2-minute walk from the train station and it has a fabulous restaurant. It’s a family run hotel and while not very American in style, it is quaint. To me it’s in the perfect location. You get amazing views of the cathedral, the bus stops right outside, and there are restaurants and the famous Place des Épars is right there. The hotel has a small lift and a great bar.

Even closer to the gare (about two minutes walk from the Boeuf) you also have the recently remodeled Hôtel Jehan de Beauce that has been remodeled in a Art Déco style. I have not stayed there since the remodel. Across the street is the Timhotel and nearest the gare is the Poèmes de Chartres hotel. I am not sure if they have a lift but it has been newly renovated. Near the Place des Épars (the very center of town] there is also a new Mercure.

If you need any infos on Chartres, let me know. It’s my old stomping grounds.

Alexander,
Thank you for the hotel suggestions for Chartres. We are thinking of spending perhaps three nights there in September before joining some other friends in Alsace. Is three nights too much time there? We thought it would be a good place to get over jet lag, see some sights and not be rushed. What are your thoughts? Thanks

We stayed in an attic room on a last minute booking.com deal at Jehan de Beauce last summer—nicely remodeled, expensive breakfast. It had a garage that we wanted. It is across a wide boulevard fron the station and is swanky in style compared to the Hôtellerie.
Hotels near the station are down a gradual hill from the cathedral area., There is not a lot of restaurant choice near the the station.

If Alexander could give more info about the bus at Le Boeuf Couronné that could help for someone with mobility issues. It’s in a nice location up this hill between the station and the cathedral. You may want to look at Google to see the terrain and what each area offers, also.

Iif you are good with the simpler style of the hôtellerie st. Yves rooms, it’s in a wonderful location and close to shops and restaurants. I’ve stayed in barebone centers that house groups in France during conferences. This is a step up. It does say it has a handicap access room, but can everyone in the group deal with the stairs? Is there an elevator? No air conditioning if you hit a heat wave. But how often do you have to stay in a 17th C convent or monastery?

Yes, it’s a good idea to rest. Day one is shot, and go slowly two and three, enjoying a provincial town.
