We will be driving to Chartres from Loire Valley (near Mesland which is SW of Chartres ) to meet with some friends taking a train from Paris
Is there a place outside the city such as a Park N Ride, where we can leave car and get bus in?
We might be going on a Saturday so we expect it to be busy so are also open to a paid parking lot and getting a taxi in

Chartres is not a big city, you can drive right into town without issues. Just use the paid parking lots at Place des Epars ("Coeur de Ville") or at the Cathedral. The latter is closer to the train station. There's a third one by the Prefecture, too. From any of these, you can walk around.
We easily found parking at the lot near the cathedral. I wouldn't worry about finding a place in town.
