Changing my dates for the EuroStar--Ugh!

So after discovering that Eurostar tickets go up in price like plane tickets and I spent $202/person for the 4 of us for a whopping $808, my mom had emergency surgery and will be recovering for the next couple of months so we had to move our Europe trip with them to Sept 18th. I should be in the air at this very minute if we didn't cancel our flight. Oh well, at least my mom is doing well and now we have something to look forward to for the next few months.

I made the reservations with Trainline.eu. I don't know if that makes a difference.

My question--it says the tickets are non-refundable.But the website gives you a place to cancel them They are exchangeable for a charge $47/person. I can now get the same ticket for $64/person. Do I have any options? What is the difference in them being cancellable but not refundable. Is it just to let them know your not coming?? I am confused. Too expensive to make a mistake and click on the wrong button.

What is the best option for me to deal with this?

Looking at the Trainline.EU FAQ page it appears if you pull up your booking, you can see if there is a cancel button or not. If so, it will show you how much refund you will receive from cancelling. But do this before your travel date, or else you won't get any refund. If it were me, I'd cancel and get whatever refund I can get then(if you are sure of your travel plans) go and buy another ticket. But check the FAQ page on their website.

....What is the difference in them being cancellable but not refundable......

I think it means that the ticket can be cancelled but the money you paid will not be refunded. I would assume you will have some portion of that ticket's price available for a credit against a future ticket.

You might consider trip insurance for any expensive travels.

No recommendations but I'm so glad your Mom is recovering and will be able to do your trip this Fall!

It’s unfortunate that you had to cancel your trip but it’s good to hear that your mom is on the mend.

If your tickets are indeed nonrefundable, your only other recourse is to obtain proof of your cancellation for your insurance company.

Here’s an excerpt from trainline FAQ

If you are trying to cancel your ticket and you do not see a Cancel button, then this means that your ticket is non-refundable and non-exchangeable. We can cancel the ticket to free up the seats or in case you need any proof for your insurance company.

If you did not buy travel insurance, try calling your credit card company to see if you can get any compensation.

Wishing your mom a quick recovery.
