Champagne region

When last visiting Reims, we drove about 30 minutes to Hautvillers. In the Abbey church there (Abbaye St Pierre d'Hautvillers) is the tomb of Dom Perignon. The small church and garden were lovely and peaceful and definitely worth a stop. We enjoyed some fabulous views of the valley and vineyards while there. It is close to Epernay, but if you don't want to stop in Epernay you needn't, although I wish we had (we were short on time, alas!). We had a picnic lunch that day so I have no recs for eateries to give you. Best of luck!

Drive down D980 to Dormans. Scenic route, wine, pretty town. For history visit Varennes-en-Argonne, where King Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette were caught trying to escape the Revolution, and a major WWI objective also. One of my favorite small towns.

I would not recommend skipping Épernay, as walking down the Route du Champagne is IMO key to understanding the sparkling wine's historical importance. Plus you can drink lots of great Champagne.

As for smaller villages, Rilly-la-Montagne is a great choice that's easily reached by train. There are a number of fine, small grower-producers there who are happy to share their knowledge and wines with you; I especially recommend Roger Manceaux. Advisable to plan ahead and make reservations at the wineries you most want to visit. And be sure to walk up the steep streets to reach the trail head south of town to see the beautiful vistas.

I second the recommendation to make reservations for tastings. France isn't like Napa Valley where there are lots of drop-in tastings available. At least check the vineyards online to see if required. Enjoy!

It seems crazy to go to Reims and not go to Epernay. Why else would you even go there? It’s all about the champagne!
