Chamonix to Vevey, Switzerland Transportation

We will end our Alpine My Way tour the morning of June 13, 2025. We will stay that night in Chamonix. Then we have 3 nights in Vevey before our flight home to the United States. We need to take the train from Chamonix to Vevey on Saturday, June 14. Should we buy a ticket now? If you have taken the route, I would like to hear your advice.

Separate question: if we stick with the 3 nights in Vevey, we will need to get to the Geneva Airport by 8:00 for an 11:00 flight. It appears we can make it. Or I could travel to Geneva the night before our flight. I’d still have to get to the airport from our Geneva hotel, so there’s still some time eaten up by that movement. What is advisable? We are not familiar with the airport or logistics within Geneva.

Flix buses run regularly from Chamonix to Geneva and take about 90 minutes to the airport, but check their website on the timing and cost. I believe that there are other bus companies but I have only used Flixbus. From the airport boo a train to Vevey and back. There are number of hotels adjacent to the Geneva airport and I would stay at one of them the night before the flight. I have used Booking.com to identify locations and costs even if I book directly with the hotel. They all seem to have shuttles. Have fun.

The trains from Chamonix to Switzerland are TER. Regional trains with no seat reservations and price is always the same. Trains from there to Martigny and Vevey are Swiss trains always the same price. So you do not have to buy ahead.

The trains go right to Geneva airport from Vevey. Direct trains every 30 minutes for a 1 1/4 hour trip. It is low risk in my book to go in the morning.

I would not take the Bus to Geneva to go to Vevey. It is a huge detour (more than doubles the distance) and you miss on the scenic Chamonic - Martigny railway.

You do not need to buy a ticket in advance for this trip. However doing so can save you some money. Go to www.sbb.ch and see what a ticket Chamonix - Vevey costs now, and on June 14.

The trip will always involve a French train to Vallorcine, and Swiss trains form there onwards. SBB can sell you a ticket for the French train as well (but SNCF cannot sell you tickets for Swiss trains, hence my suggestion to use SBB). The French part is always 5,- CHF but the Swiss part can be cheaper when booked in advance.

Fuil normal fare for that route is 43.50 CHF (that is what you pay if you buy at the last moment). Booked in advance it is currently 34.10 CHF.
