What options are there for going from Chamonix to Paris in the summer? Is it necessary or recommended to take the shuttle to Geneva first or are there more direct options? Bus or train? Plane?
We weren’t sure either as we will end the RS My Way Alps tour on August 31 in Chamonix. It was recommended that we take a Fixbus from Chamonix to Place Dorclere Bus station in Geneva and walk 1/4 mile to Cornavin station and then take the TGV from Geneva to Paris. The train stops at Bellegarde where it meets the train from St Gervais.
Another person recommended we take Flixbus from Chamonix to Annecy Then we could take trains to Paris but I wasn’t comfortable with the train transfer times of 10 minutes.
We finally decided to rent a car for the trip. We will get the car in Chamonix on Sat. Afternoon and park it at the hotel and then drive to Orly Airport on Sunday where we will take a taxi into Paris.
Good luck!
The train between Geneva and Chamonix is scenic but a little slow, due to narrowing
gauges requiring at least one connection along the way. The bus to either Geneva
Cornavin or Geneva Airport is the fastest way to get to Geneva, and from there it's
a 3 hour train to Gare de Lyon.
In Annecy, the bus station is co-located with the train station. A connection time of
10 minutes would be fine, but the question there is whether the bus arrives on time
or not.
I suspect the car rental option is fine as long as you're comfortable driving in France.
Two bus tickets + 2 train tickets is probably over $100 and not that far off the cost of
a 1-way car rental.
It is about 6 hours to Paris from Chamonix by train. Train to St Gervais les Bains, then train to Bellegarde, then TGV to Paris.
Thanks everyone!
