Hello friends, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a car service that could take my wife and I from Chamonix to Colmar? We don't want to rent a car, but were hoping to get there faster than the train. Thanks everyone
Its 5 hours by car and 6 hours by train. And the train ride is actually quite interesting...
But the choice is yours.
The train ride through Switzerland is delightful (especially via Lausanne IMO, but via Visp is also fine, both routes are similar in length), you would miss out! If you look at current times, there is a bus replacement near Martigny, but that's temporary.
Thanks very much everyone! We love the trains in Europe, it's dealing with multiple transfers with luggage that gets to be a bit of a challenge. If it was a direct route or even only one connection to get from Chamonix to Colmar we would definitely train it.
If it's a matter of being unable to carry luggage, it's different. Given that this is an 'exotic' journey, I think that Daytrip is the best option. But I wouldn't be surprised to see very little change out of 1,000 euros...
Thanks! We are actually planning on staying a few days in Colmar, and the heading to Paris on from there. We will probably be in Europe about a month through the shoulder seasons so packing ultra light can be a challenge, hence the known issue of multiple train transfers. I have not been able to find any train routes that made it from Chamonix (our preferred start point) or Geneva to Colmar in less than 5 hours or so allowing for 2 transfers etc. I looked at SNCF, DB, and Eurorail etc. If you have any advice on rail carriers for this portion of our journey it would be greatly appreciated!
You might look at taking a bus to Geneva. From there you can get to Colmar in 4 hours with train changes at Bern and Basel.
Thanks very much!
