Anyone tried taking the train from chamonix to colmar through Switzerland? Looks like there are several train transfers, how easy or difficult is this? And what site will I use to buy the ticket in advance? Thank you.
The Swiss connections around Lake Geneva/Leman are very easy and it can be done with as few as 4 connections. Track numbers published on the schedules can help you plan. If you miss one, it shouldn't be more than an hour before the next one. [Edited] The Swiss trains don't need reservations and regular, full-fare tickets don't lock you into any particular connection time, just a route. However, the French train tickets may be time specific, and that's also the case during the period when a bus (smaller) replaces the train between Chamonix and Le Châtelard-Frontière. If you're concerned, you can request a schedule to show you longer connection times, but that's not necessary for most people. You can buy tickets at www.sbb.ch or in Chamonix-Mont Blanc train station.
