I need to be in Avignon by 3 in the afternoon and can leave any time in the early morning from Chamonix. My trip is a little to far out to check time schedules out (or I’m looking in the wrong place). Thanks in advance…date is Sept. 1rst
Rent a car if you need to be there by 3.
Chamonix to Avignon is not easy to do by all other means of transport.
If you took the train you need to get to Lyon which requires two trains.
I read where I could take a bus to Geneva and catch the train there to Avignon…..I’ve never driven in France.
Ok yes that is right I see you could go by bus to Geneva and catch the train.
You can search using this site to get an idea of what your options may be like https://www.sncf.com/en

www.rome2rio.com is a good way to start your search.
Then follow up directly with the transportation providers to confirm and book.
For a random day in February you could do this:
Flixbus Chamonix bus station to Geneva central bus station 7:15 am - 9:25 am and then
SCNF train Geneva to Avignon TGV station 11:30 am - 3:09 pm (with 1 transfer, in Lyon)
There is an earlier train from Geneva 10 am - 2:25 pm (but with 2 transfers)
Google maps says walk time Geneva central bus station to Geneva train station only 6 min. But for me I would have to build in time for bus in traffic, orienting myself the right direction from the bus station, etc.
And then the train or taxi from Avignon TGV to your actual destination in Avignon (the TGV station is a bit out of town).
Enjoy the planning!
I would go to Geneva and get a hotel by the train station the night before.
That gives you more and earlier train options.
I would recommend you get the Rome2Rio mobile app for your phone. You can look up point to point destinations and Rome2Rio will present you with multiple options if it's possible (train, bus, Blabla car or even airplane). For September, the train schedules aren't available yet. I'm in a similar predicament; trying to find train schedules for April but have to wait until at least another month for me (maybe schedules posted 60 days in advance?)
