Chamonix to Aosta or Courmayeur?

Has anyone done this day trip by bus?

Will be in the region in September, and not sure if the lift will be open to get into Italy, but we also don't mind taking the bus for a day.

Which town would have more to see/do? And can we get around on foot or would need to use bus there to get around?

I'm more interested in what regular travelers think than Rick Steves, on this one :-)

I have not been to Courmayeur but I have spent time in Aosta and there is lots to do! There is a very long pedestrian shopping street with side streets going in either direction that also have loads to see. The Roman ruins in Aosta are worth spending time taking a look at...you can't miss them as they wind in and around the town. You can also go under the main church where they have excavated quite a bit of it. There is also a small Roman theater where performances are still held - not sure about September though. Along the valley past Aosta are some great castles that are also very interesting.

It's a a small city with a relaxed vibe and interesting Roman ruins. We enjoyed it.

Good to know. Thanks.

We should be okay walking around then? No need for buses or taxi?

Did you all go by bus or car to Aosta from Chamonix, or you were already in Italy?
