chamonix to annecy

I am surprised to find no direct or convenient train transport between these two towns. Oops.

Two changes on train with 10 minutes between -- for two old codgers pushing 80 with luggage for two months (not huge but still not tiny) that seems awkward.

I looked at buses -- one with reserved seats has one change and is also over 3 hours.

the other is Flixbus and is dirt cheap and direct. no reservations. dirt cheap.

So has anyone had experience with flixbus? Is this something we should consider? Or are there other options?

I used Flixbus from Chamonix to Milan about a month ago. I used them several years ago from Munich to Salzburg. The bus arrived and departed on time relatively clean. There is a toilet on board. If you book pay the extra to select your preferred seat. They have an ap. That is only a 1 hour 35 minute ride. The bags that don't fit are checked under the side of the bus you get a claim check. If the bus is making stops in other towns you should be aware to look to make sure someone that is getting off is not walking away with your bag.

We used Chamonixfirst for a direct transfer to and from Geneva / Chamonix a few years ago. They also do direct transport from Chamonix to Annecy. Might be worth checking out if you want something easy? They have comfortable vans with room for luggage and friendly drivers.

Be used Flixbus twice in Italy. Great price, clean busses, right on schedule. I would not hesitate to use them again. You’ll save money buying tickets in advance rather than on the bus.

Flixbus is the most convenient way to go; Blablabus might also have a direct connection (and would be equally OK). I never used Flixbus on that route but they're generally OK - buses can be a bit late or cramped, but this is not a big deal for this 90 minute journey.

Appreciate the feedback on flixbus. I hate taking buses but 90 direct beats 3.5 hours with two changes at our age.

Janet, I was keen to read the responses to this topic as we are making the same journey next week. Unfortunately the Flixbus is not operating M-F (only weekends). Best wishes!

Thanks Diane -- THAT is super helpful to know. We are thinking of bagging the Chamonix portion of the trip much as I hate to because of the difficulty of transport with luggage. We are old and it is really hard to manage luggage on trains.

Right, I swear it used to be daily. Unfortunate development; I agree that the train is really not convenient for this journey (even without luggage: it takes forever!).

Have you looked at renting a car? Or are you opposed to driving?

My husband can no longer drive and I don't want to do it in a foreign country; he always did it and loved it. So car is out. Thinking of bagging Chamonix and just doing Annecy and Lyon -- or bagging the whole first 10 days and just doing Paris. I really would love to go to Chamonix and wish we had booked the trip into Paris -- we could have gone south by train with limited luggage -- but open jaw is in so many ways cheaper and more convenient. Didn't expect the COVID crisis to be at this level either.

We are in a good place to cope with possible breakthrough COVID in Paris -- but of course on the road would be a lot harder -- with a hotel here and there.
