Planning on fly from Porto Portugal to Geneva and taking a bus to Chamonix May 4th and staying 2 nights.
Since we won't be arriving until noon or later we plan to just explore the small town and do the Aiguille du Midi the next day.
I realize this is dependent on Mother Nature.
Would we better to stay in Annecy for 3 nights (planned on going there after Chamonix) and taking an early bus to Chamonix for the
day when we are assured the weather would allow great views.
Another question would be are the lifts open this early in the season? Reading R. Steves France book there is some question on operation of the gondola's around this time.
Appreciate your views.

it is not always easy to reach Chamonix with public transport early in the morning (check Flixbus timetables)
aiguille should be open check the times for 2026

I'll be interested to hear what l'Aiguille du Midi is like early May. We went late June and it was still packed with snow.
