i wanted to know if May is a good time to visit chamonix for a family holiday. i am trying to find out opening/closing dates for some of the excursions around but im not sure if i got it right that most are shut in May.

When in May? In general, late May is OK, early May can still be muddy and snowy at higher elevations - but you can still go.
For cable car closing/opening dates look at the lift company website (Mont Blanc Natural Resort); I believe Aiguille du Midi is year-round.
i was looking at May 5.
from what i saw most trams/trains above are shut for this date. does not seem worth visiting at this time.
Full summer schedule is not available for 2022 yet but indeed, the Montenvers train (for mer de Glace) was not open until May 24th last year.
And overall, May 5 is definitely not the best time to go.
Maybe have a look at Annecy instead? It will be better at that time of the year.
