We will be in Annecy in late April and are wondering whether it will be worth our time to take the train to Chamonix for a couple of days. We know that the weather might not allow great views and that the lifts will not be open. But does the town itself offer enough to merit a visit? Will any lower level trails--perhaps along the river--be doable?
Any advice on travel from Chamonix to Geneva, also by train?
Merci!
Hello,
I've been to Chamonix in both June of 2024 and June of 2025. I have not been there in April but I can tell you that I believe the town is amazing and there is enough to do. I was also in Annecy last year in June. There is the perfect transportation between the 2 cities called FlixBus (it has a lot of routes and 1 of them is Chamonix to Annecy and vice versa). It was clean, pleasant and very efficient.
Hope you have a wonderful time,
Mitzi
Aiguille du Midi will be open, same for the Montenvers railway. Only the Brévent & Flégère lifts will be closed (from 20 Apr onwards).
The Aiguille du Midi is worth the trip by itself if the weather is good. We did a very fast day trip from Annecy in May a few years ago and made the decision to go the night before based on the weather and it was perfect.

We had had to cancel an earlier plan given the issues around COVID and so can't comment on the town -- but the Aiguille was well worth the effort.
Depending on your date of travel and schedule, as noted, Flixbus and BlaBlaBus
provide bus service from Annecy bus/train station to Chamonix Sud. Much faster
than going back to Geneva and taking the train.
You would want to have some cold weather clothing - it still may be cool in town
and most definitely at the top of the AdM (it's below zero up there today).
The risk is that the weather makes the journey to the top of the Aiguille du Midi
difficult, impossible, or worthless (if you can't see anything).
I'm not a big bus fan and there is rail service from Annecy to Chamonix without going back to Geneva . The Leman Express ( an S Bahn type service ) runs the route - L2 service from Annecy to La Roche sur Foron . Change there to L3 train to St Gervais LeFayet , then to The Mont Blanc Express to Chamonix . Beautiful; scenery on the trip . Further the train from Chamonix to Montenvers ( Mer de Glace ) is worthwhile but sadly .while the views at the top are striking , the recession of the glacier due to climate change is very pronounced . A sad sight indeed ! Chamonix itself is a favorite for me , the town is a lovely place to wander about .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A9man_Express
Usually spring is a perfect time to go to Aiguille du midi as plenty of white fresh snow and view can be amazing with the sun!
you coud also try the Brévent lift or a little hike at Parc du Merlet in les Houches
QC spa is also wonderful
Triplet blessings (Mitzi), balso, Janettravels44, shoeflyer, steven, and Gaëlle Dunoyer, I thank you all for your replies and am indeed grateful for your advice!
Steven, we have booked the trains you recommended from Annecy to Chamonix and will plan on taking the train to Montenvers as well. Gaëlle and janettravels44, it appears that we will arrive a bit too late in April to take the Aiguille du Midi lift, unless it stays open past the April 20 date on the website. If balso is right and it is open, we will definitely take advantage of it, weather allowing. Mitzi, thank you for your assurance that the town alone will be worth the journey. Shoeflyer, we plan to have several layers of clothing available for the cool to cold weather and will be sure to check the web cams, should we get lucky and find a lift open.
Again, my thanks! Merci beaucoup!

The Aiguille du Midi doesn't close April 20 -- it is currently showing cable car times through the end of May
kc,
If you decide to take the lifts to the top of the Aguille du Midi it's prudent to be aware of the altitude, which is 3,842 meters (12,605 feet). If you have any respiratory issues, you might want to check with your family physician about that.
Janettravels44,
thanks for letting me know about the end-of-May Aiguille du Midi lift closure. I'll double-check my source. I'd love to be able to take this lift, weather permitting.
Ken,
thanks for the good advice regarding altitude! I had no problems at Cuzco, which is at 11,000+ feet, but I was much younger then. Given my "seniority" and approaching dotage, I'll check with my doctor.
I probably shouldn't assume that what I did in my teens is doable in my late 70's, lol.

I am just looking at the official web site -- what is really happening? who knows.
The official site for tickets is:
Aiguille du Midi tickets
And it says the AdM is open starting at 8:10am and last RT up at 15:30 thru the
end of May. But, schedules may change due to maintenance amongst other
things, so best to check before you book.
Note that the train to Montenvers that Steven refers to is not a regular train. It is
a separately ticketed train that only goes up to the Mer de Glace and back. You
can purchase a more comprehensive pass that includes both the AdM and the
Mer de Glace train (and more in summer or winter, but perhaps not when you are
there):
Chamonix passes
You should be able to make a reservation for a time to go up the Aiguille du Midi
(queue up for the descent) as part of the booking process. I would do that a day or
so ahead of time once you know what the weather is. The other advantage of the
pass is that you can go up more than once, as opposed to the one chance a single
ticket gets you.
The Skyway Monte Bianco (Italian side) is closed 20 April to 22 May. They were closed around that time last year, too (when I was planning a trip for June). I think it is annual maintenance.
Over the summer, when both sides are open and the weather is clear, you an take the Panoramic Mont Blanc (run by the Chamonix concession) between the French side and the Italian side.
