Chamonix in early October

My husband and I are planning to be in Chamonix for 3 nights in early October. I'm concerned about booking non-refundable hotel reservations until we arrive in France (we will be in Nice for 3 nights prior to driving to Chamonix). If the weather looks bad, we may forgo Chamonix and spend more time in Anncey and plan a night or two in Lyon. Any suggestions?

It's hard to tell from your question what kind of suggestions you are asking for. If it is a suggestion about the weather, one may acknowledge that winter storms can strike early at high elevations, so your hesitation about non-refundable reservations in Chamonix is probably well founded.

Are you looking for ideas of what to see and do in Annecy or Lyon? Other towns to visit?

Yes, I was looking for affirmation of holding off on making reservations. I've heard Anncey is wonderful, so even if the weather turns bad I think it will be fine for one night. We are going on to Beaune and the Loire Valley after Anncey.
Any other towns besides Lyon worth seeing? We toured through Provence several years ago. .

Around Lyon, I'm looking at Perouges and Vienne. Perouges is supposed to be a medieval town and Vienne has lots of Roman ruins.

I'll stop in Annecy briefly on my way to Chamonix for two nights. I'll be there in a couple weeks. If the weather is good, the plan is to take the cable car to Mont Blanc with an easy hike to Mer de Glace and train back down. If the weather isn't good. I'll plan some hiking and visit Mer de Glace.

I'm also planning to drive through the Gorges de la Bourne on the way south out of Chamonix.

I've made my reservations. If you want to hold off, the forecast won't be even close to reliable until at most 10 days out.
