Chamonix in early August. How busy?

How busy are the trails in early August? We normally plan our trips in the off season but this time the beginning of August is our only option. We get up before the sun to get to the trail head and start hiking as soon as there is day light to beat the crowds. However it looks like a lot of the hikes in the area require a cable car so it limits how early we can get started. The other trip option we are looking at to Slovenia to include Velika Planina -> Logar Valley -> Jezersko.

Are you talking about day hikes, or doing part/all of the Tour du Mont Blanc?

If you are talking day hikes, then, yes, you will most likely need a pass to access
the lifts, but, in many cases it's possible to hike up/down from the town if you
are up to it.

The town will be busy and fairly crowded. There is a jazz festival around that
time both in the town and in the mountains that may affect things a bit, but it
is not anything like Montreux or North Sea or any of the other major festivals.
And those people would not be hiking anyways.

There are so many hiking trails in Chamonix I doubt there will be that many
people on any single one of them, perhaps apart from the paths to Lac Blanc.

Somewhat related, does anyone know how early you can book tickets for the lifts/trams? Will be there mid-July. The website is prompting a code to add to cart.
