Bonjour! We are two fairly fit seniors who hope to be in Paris (again) next May and are considering visiting Chamonix for a few days, traveling by train from Paris (no car). I'm aware of the weather at that time of year, but we'd really like to see the Aiguille du Midi, stay in the beautiful town, and just enjoy being there. We're not into hiking very much, so would probably see museums, walk the streets, and breath the air! Any special advice? Thanks, Linda
It is more efficient to take a bus or shuttle from Geneva to Chamonix much of the time,
as the train is slow going into the mountains.
The Aiguille du Midi will most likely be open, but most of the other lifts will probably
be closed, as this is in the normal period between ski season and summer season,
and the lift traffic is low/the lifts are closed for maintenance.
Even if you will not be hiking, the top of the Aiguille du Midi is 12,000', so if you think
you have issues at altitude (it can have nothing to do with exertion), hydrate well
before you go up, and be alert to potential issues.
The Montevers train to the ice cave should be open, but I cannot say if the ice cave
will be there (they redo it every year; now, sadly, due to the glacier retreat as a
result of climate change).
This is also kind of "mud season", when the snow is melting and the valleys can be
wet as a result.
Just came back from Chamonix as a woefully unfit 50something; bus from Geneva is super easy, just over an hour. However, depending on where you stay in Cham, it could be a good 15 some odd minute push of yourself and your luggage to your hotel (definitely ask the hotel for ground transportation options).
Annual openings are here - https://www.montblancnaturalresort.com/fr/ouvertures-annuelles - next year isn't up so you can definitely email them to get an idea of when the specific cable cars, etc., are open.
The Mer de Glace train was great; the gondola was great but once off the gondola, it's still about 200 steps EACH way into the Ice cave, but there are multiple landings you can stop on.
.. not into hiking very much, so would probably...walk the streets...
There is a lovely walking path that starts in the town and goes along the side of the river for a fair distance. It is definitely a walk (as long or as short as you want), and not a hike. Something to consider after a good lunch.
Thanks to all of you for your replies. Very helpful! Yes, we would take the train from Paris to Geneva and bus to Chamonix. I'm still working on the plans for this adventure for us. I don't even have exact dates (I'm thinking three nights?) or a hotel in mind yet. We would just like to have a new place to explore in France and the scenery there is just breathtaking! Thanks again!
We did the Aiguille Du Midi on a very quick day trip -- It was spectacular in late May and not at all crowded.

I'd love to do the gondola to Italy but it was not running when we were there.
@Janet -- Wow! Your photos are spectacular! You've sold me! Do you think 3 days (2 nights) are enough? Thanks for sharing.
Linda,
It is really 3 nights = 2 days, because your first day is arrival day (truncated) as is your third day. Stay three nights to get two full days and two partial days. Enjoy Chamonix!
@Judy -- Yes, actually that is what I meant (3 nights to give us 2 days of sightseeing). My age is showing! lol
Thanks again everyone! Now to get to the planning...
