We are considering the Mont Blanc Express train from Chamonix to travel into Switzerland for a day trip (early September 2026). We will also have a car. Are there advantages of train vs car, other than the obvious that train travel does not require "eyes on the road"? There are three of us travelling, and we are not fit enough to do any hiking; we just want beautiful scenery.

You need a special sticker for your car to drive it in Switzerland. Last time we transited through Switzerland, just enroute from Italy to France, we had to stop at the border to obtain one. I would take a train (and enjoy the view better also).

The sticker or "vignette" required to drive in Switzerland is easy to purchase online. They're in the $50 neighborhood.
