We are planning to stay 3-4 days in Chamonix or nearby. We will not have a car. Any suggestions what to do there aside from enjoying the spectacular views?
bd,
You could for example......
- take the cable cars up to the Aguille du Midi and perhaps try the Step Into The Void platform - https://www.chamonix.net/english/leisure/sightseeing/step-into-the-void .
- depending on time-of-year, you could take the Panoramic Mount Blanc over to Point Helbronner, Italy.
- take the train to the Mer de Glace.
- take a tour of the town in the small tourist train - http://www.traincham.com/en/home/ .
- do some hiking
- try Paragliding - https://www.paragliding-chamonix.com/tandem-paragliding?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-qq5h6Dx4QIVCNVkCh0VFwkxEAAYAiAAEgKlbPD_BwE . Be sure to check your travel insurance as many policies won't cover "extreme sports". The Paragliding company may offer insurance.
For other suggestions, check the RS France guidebook.
Beware of the midi altitude. We paid buckets of money for the ride up and the family couldn’t take the feeling.
THe hiking is truly spectacular, you can take gondolas up to ridge lines so you are not hiking straight up. There are ascents but they are doable. Not sure of the status of Mer de Glacé but you can visit the glacier.
Take the La Flegere gondola up and then hike to Lac Blanc...best view in all of the alps IMHO.
