Challenges getting taxis in Paris at the moment

Hello all! I'm in the middle of a wonderful trip to Paris and southern France at the moment, and the weather is glorious. One thing we have noticed, owing to the protests in Nanterre, is that when we are tired and want to take a taxi back to our hotel instead of schlepping on the Metro, taxis are very very thin on the ground. I have 3 taxi apps (Uber, Bolt, and G7), and none could yield a taxi yesterday afternoon. Also, our hotel is telling guests that it is very difficult to get a daytime taxi right now. Also, if you need a taxi for airports/train stations, do reserve in advance.

I would be prepared to use the Metro as much as possible -- or your feet. :) Other than this, the protests are not noticeable in central Paris, but another hotel clerk notes that tomorrow is Saturday, so possibly protests could be more visible here in the city.

This is also a huge travel weekend in France, July 1st. French people are heading to train stations, airports, and elsewhere.
We've had this happen even with everything calm in France. Our landlady had to drive us to a train station so we could get a taxi to CDG. Otherwise, nobody could respond to a last minute call.

We could not get a taxi to the airport reserving the night before a couple years ago; we had always done it that way in the past. Now when heading for CDG, I book a G7 two nights ahead and have not had problems. We have never found it easy to get cabs on the street. It helps to go to very busy areas like Bastille or Place Italie or other traffic hubs.

On some Facebook Paris travel groups I have noticed a lot of recent comments that first time visitors are nervous to use the Metro and are instead opting for Uber, taxis etc. for all their rides, not just if tired. That issue combined with a high number of tourists there these past couple of months may be having an impact on availability.

That always mystifies me as the metro is so incredibly efficient and fast and most of the time we don't have problems getting seats -- yes rush hour is crowded, but then rush hour on the streets can mean sitting in traffic while the meter runs. I'd never take a taxi cross town if I could help it.

Janet, I feel like in the last 5 years the métro has become much more crowded and getting a seat take a giant stroke of good luck! But I live on ligne 9 and it's never been my favorite.

I've noticed the same before the riots. On Sunday evening, I was unable to book a taxi for Tuesday morning.
I feel that this is pretty much a "back to pre-Covid normal" situation: taxis have always been a bit thin on the ground in Paris...

We've just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks in France, and we had an issue a week or so ago getting a taxi from our hotel in the 5th to Montparnasse station around 9 in the morning--hotel staffer told us he wasn't having any luck for others that day, and suggested we get an Uber or take the bus. It was pouring rain at the time, and having been caught in a deluge on our first night that soaked clothes, shoes, purse, everything, we paid exorbitant surge pricing for an Uber for a relatively short distance. At the time, it was explained that it was due to Fashion Week/Air Show/Fete de la Musique.

Other than a taxi to our hotel from CDG, that was the only time we used anything other than Metro/RER/walking, and we had no issues with those. We did sign up with the US State Dept and had received an alert about the protests and the shutdown of buses. We went to the Musee d'Orsay that night and then later to the Eiffel Tower on almost empty RER trains. We noted that our train was not going all the way to the end of the line, but that didn't affect us.
