CDG to the 4th

I will be staying at Rue de Rivoli and Rue du bourg tibourg. I'm thinking
of taking the RER from CDG to St Michel-Notre Dame and walking from there. About
how far is it? Is there a better way? Merci.

I've done it. It's about a 10 minute walk, past the Hotel de Ville. If you turn to your left off of the train, and take the exit (sortie) marked "Ile de la Cite" there is an escalator and you pop up right near Notre Dame.

Alternatively, you could get off at the Chatelet-Les Halles RER stop, transfer to Metro line 1, and get off at the Hotel de Ville stop. Personally I think that's a lot of underground walking in order to take the Metro for one stop. I don't think you'd save any time. In fact, I just looked it up on Google maps, and it would be longer by a few minutes.

It's a more pleasant walk from St. Michel. If it's pouring down rain, there's a taxi stand nearby. Rolling luggage is not a problem-sidewalks are smooth.

Chatelet-Les Halles is divided into two sections with a large underground passageway connecting the two. In your case, the RER lines and the metro line 1 are on the same side, meaning that changing to line 1 is only a couple of minutes. You don't need to take the long underground tunnel between the two areas of the metro. You do need to hold onto your ticket to exit the RER and enter the metro area. It's all underground and crowded.
Or, as Karen did, you come up above ground at St. Michel and enjoy a walk that takes you right in front of Notre Dame, a nice welcome to Paris.
