CDG Paris airport 12 hr layover (all the same flight)

I can only try to do the math on this. Assuming an on time arrival at CDG and a day hotel at the airport:

• Estimate, with fudge factor, 2 hours from landing, clearing Immigration, to dropping off day bags at hotel and travel to and arrival somewhere in Paris. 10 hours left til departure.

-sightsee and grab lunch somewhere for 5 hours. Be aware of tourist sights requiring pre booked timed entry. 5 hours til departure

-return to day hotel, shower and change clothes, allowing 2 hours. 3 hours left to departure

• arrive back at CDG 3 hours before departure, check in for flight and go through exit Passport Control and securityand find your gate.

If your hotel is not at the airport, reduce your time in Paris accordingly.

This sounds very doable, my concern about checking back in and I would hope 3 hrs would be enough for an 11PM flight,

Running yourself ragged. You spend 1-2 hours on arrival, time to get into Paris, time to get back, check into a short stay hotel, get back to check in and leave Paris. Can you really fit in a meaningful amount of time in Paris. Sorry but I don’t remotely think this is doable. Do you fly regularly? Are you up to that kind of schedule over 24 hours?

First, if the EES system isn't working smoothly by next August, heads will be rolling.

Secondly, you will probably have multiple schedule changes between now and next August that may change the length of your layover.

Most day rooms offer the best rates during off hours-9/10am to 5/6pm when rooms are typically empty.

While I think it's possible to spend a few hours in Paris during a 12 hour layover and the thought of a quick visit to the city sounds fun, the reality can be quite different. The deciding factor will be you.

I know after an overnight flight from the US with Paris as my destination, I really don't enjoy my first day. With little sleep I try to stay outdoors, grab something simple for lunch because my stomach is not on Paris time yet and keep moving so I wake up the next morning ready to go.

If you can sleep well on the plane (I don't) you may have the energy for a brief Paris stopover.

We have something similar, a 9-hour layover in Hanoi. Without knowledge of distances and local traffic, we’ll have a guide meet us at the airport and take us somewhere for a few of those hours.

How well do you sleep on a plane? Something to consider.

I was going to say the same thing that Jean said. Between now and then, there'll be schedule changes likely. I'd have a loose plan that's easily changed.

I once had a 9-hour layover at CDG, and I debated leaving the airport for several hours, but ultimately decided that it wasn't worth it. I'm glad I stayed. For one thing, I was very jet-lagged and tired.

So what I did was just buy a day pass to one of the lounges for the airport. There was a new one that had recently opened (this was in 2022), and they had everything there: showers, sleeping rooms, lounging chairs, and lots of food and drink. It made the time pass by very quickly, and I was ultimately glad that I didn't venture out and try and just make my way around the city.

But obviously, that was my experience. And as others have pointed out, your schedule may change in the meantime, so I wouldn't worry about it too much right now.

Every time I see one of these posts I’m like “Yeah actually it seems like you have plenty of time - also I could never.” YMMV but I would be clock watching so hard, no way I could be zen enough to chill at a cafe. Just… be wary of “the frictions of war” the lost time waiting for a train, finding a cafe, that little walk that takes longer than you expect. If anything, I would resist the urge to see any actual ticketed sights and stick to a park/cafe.

Have you found hotels that offer nap rates like that?

Thank you for your replies. I chose the long layover to break it up, wanted to get outside walk around , fresh air . sunshine etc... We have been to Paris a few times but really wanted to see Norte Dame and Sainte Chappelle again I realize it a long way off I had the choice of a 7 hr layover but didn't feel like it was enough. I like the idea about a pick up at the airport and back so were not constantly watching the clock, I will look into that, appreciate it.

A few on the forum had some great suggestions for hotels with 4 hour stays. I guess I will see how it is goes..

My ex-DIL went through Paris with a group and they had a six hour layover and still managed to go into town, see a few sights, have lunch, and get back in time for their flight. Made me anxious just thinking about it, but they pulled it off. (I don't know what they did with the luggage unless one of the group stayed behind to take care of it, I'm not sure.)
