I will have only carryon luggage when I arrive at CDG from US. Do I still have to go through passport control and through baggage pick up to get taxi?
Just passport control.
You will need to go thru passport control to enter France from US.
The times when I've arrived at 2E after Immigration you are channeled downstairs and walk thru the baggage claim area to go do the Customs walk thru (literally you just keep walking) to exit the secure area. Follow the signs for the taxi rank. Ignore people ho come up to you and offer you a ride. Get in the actually taxi line.
You say from the US but I do not know if you mean a flight from a US airport to CDG or you mean that you flew from the US to a layover somewhere along way. So, if you are flying directly from the US or if you had layover but it was not in a Schengen Zone country such as Canada or the UK, then, yes you go through passport control. Conversely, if your layover was in a Schengen Zone country, then you skip passport control. because you will have already done that.
At CDG, as Pam correctly says, after you go through passport control (which every passenger must do), to exit, they route you through the baggage claim area. So you do have to go through baggage claim to get outside to the taxis, but there is of course no reason for you to stop in baggage claim if you haven't checked luggage. Then you will walk through the Customs check, which is literally usually just a walk through.
Then be sure to follow the signs for the official taxis. Do NOT get swayed by anyone in the terminal who tries to get you to ride with them, even if they say they are "official." The signs are very obvious and east to follow.
