Dad has his heart set on having our portrait done by a sidewalk artist and on having escargot.
Where is the best place for the artists? and in the Marais - where for snails?/
Thanks
For a quick caricature or portrait - Place du Tertre in Montmartre, near the Sacre Coeur basilica.
Escargot? There are no shortage of 'Top 10 best places to eat Escargot in Paris' listing on Google. Just so you know - most places will use pre processed snails purchased in bulk. Then stuffed into the shells which they get separately, and then the garlic butter is added. The taste basically depends on whether the garlic/parsley/butter is commercially made or house made.
What CJean posted. Our kids had the grandkids done, such fun and quite the souvenir.
I agree with CJean, but do want you to know that the snails are pretty much the same whether you order them in a brasserie or buy them frozen at the grocery to reheat at home for a holiday. Most haven't been raised and purged in France for decades but come from Eastern Europe. It's the garlic-parsley butter that you drip onto bread that makes them so good, that and a glass of white wine.
Edit: Alexander’s suggestion below is the perfect suggestion.
A fun institution for escargots is L'ESCARGOT DE MONTORGUEIL. They have a giant tasting platter and many flavors. I quite love it.
The other place you're likely to find caricaturists is on the left bank of the Seine, among the bouquinistes, particularly, as I recall, in the 5th and 6th.
Thanks for the help
make sure you see the 'artist' complete a portrait so you know that person can actually do it -- to call these people 'artists' is a stretch. I have a friend who had a portrait of his son done at Place du Tertre; the kid is quite distinctive looking but his wife's first question was 'who's the kid?' Caricatures are of course less critical for likeness but still -- see someone actually do it.
the Les Escargot on Montorgueil in les Halles is very good and they have lots of different preparations of escargot. A French friend took us there for lunch and we shared some traditional escargot and then had fish and dessert and both were excellent. My husband took the vegetarian offering which was pretty terrible.
And yes, Elizabeth is right, it is the butter and garlic or other garnish you taste -- the snails are all the same
These are artists working at Place du Tertre, but I would look at their finished products to see whose work you prefer.
