Carcassonne to southeastern Switzerland / northern Italy Tirano area

Any experience in getting from the Carcassonne area to the Tirano area. We are looking to visit Carcassonne and head over to the the Bernina Express route.

I understand there is a specific Chur and return route, but we are thinking about taking some local trains instead of the express scenic train.

It doesn't appear to be very easy to get from this area of France to this area of Switzerland / Italian border. It seems like one has to budget for a significant chunk of time for travel.

I took a quick look on the Deutsche Bahn website, and it appears that Carcassone to Tirano will take at least 13-1/2 hours, but there are several faster trips to the Chur end of the Bernina Express route. Could you take that scenic ride in reverse?

It appears that you can shave a few hours off the travel time to Chur by flying between Toulouse and either Zurich or Basle, but I hate mixed-mode trips, and the time saved wouldn't be worth the extra hassle to me.

for various options, check out Rome2Rio.

But I think you're right, you're off the beaten path so the path will not be friendly.
