Does anyone have recommendations for a hotel in Carcassonne?
I stayed at the Best Western Le Donjon.
It's inside the wall of the old city. Very nice. At night, the crowds leave and the old city is quiet. Great for wandering.
I agree with Frank II. Don't be put off by the Best Western label. It is a nice hotel well situated in the walled area and a great location for enjoying the medieval area when the maddening crowds have gone for the day. Park outside the walls and they will transport you and your bags in those tiny narrow streets.
Thanks! I was looking at that one in the guide book.
A few years back we stayed several nights in Art Home BNB in town not within the fortress. Very nice, wonderful host.
I also agree with Frank II. And be sure to eat cassoulet when you’re in Carcassone. Can’t remember the restaurant we visited but cassoulet is a specialty of the region.
Just make sure you stay in la Cité, the medieval walled city, and not the boring modern town of Carcassonne. Its a hefty walk up the hill to la Cité.
I stayed in this wonderful bed and breakfast which was only a short walk up to the castle and to the new town.
Lovely rooms and huge breakfast with lots of variety. More homely than a hotel room. Walked from train station to accommodation.
Would go back again in heartbeat.
Hotel Donjon is lovely. Great breakfasts and a very central location right in the Cite. If you have a car they will send a shuttle down to meet you.
Not sure what darrenbois is talking about but the "boring modern city" is far from it in my opinion. A lively small regional city of around 40 000 with plenty of interesting sites to visit.
In my personal opinion most people do Carcassonne a big disservice by only visiting the Cite. Seems to be an idea promoted by the Rick Steves crew yet is contrary to Rick's philosophy.
I second vanbeurden13’s recommendation. Carcassonne Townhouse want one of our best stays in southern France and the walk into Cite is not hard or long.
Not to overload you with recommendations, but we stayed at Hotel Montmorency last spring and loved it. It's right outside the walls (2 mins walk into the old city itself) and the facilities are great. They also had a very lovely looking spa which we did not use.
