Carcassone as a base to explore Occitanie

We will be visiting Provence for two weeks and after that on our way back to Barcelona we plan to spend some time in Carcassone. I have 5 days available before going back to Barcelona to get our flight back to the US. Is Carcassone a good base to visit some other nice towns in the Occitanie region? I was planning to spend a couple of days in Carcassone and then go to a different town, but maybe it is better to use Carcassone as a base town to explore the neigbor towns? Could you give me some guidance on the best way to use our last 5 days to enjoy beautiful France?
Thank you for your help!!

I think you could. It might even be a good choice if it is handy to the places you want to visit.

The thing about Carcassone is that it can be a madhouse during the day. Even if that is when you are not there, you'd be paying a premium to stay there.

So I think it could work, but you might be able to do better for yourself.

I recommend only one night in Carcassone, then drive to Cathar region, castle ruins and stay in pretty, art filled Collioure, France, a pretty seaside town with a history of art, a castle, etc. Finish off with a few days in the Costa Brava just north of Barcelona.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will follow your advice and spend one, or maximum two nights in Carcassone. Best regards
