Car Trip Timing Question

We're going to drive from Bordeaux to Alsace this summer, and I'd like to "play it by ear:" touring the countryside, stopping off at especially charming places and picking our lodgings as we go. I understand this could be a little fraught in late July and early August, but that's the time window we've got. Question: does one week seem like a reasonable allowance to accomplish this?

We haven't yet decided where in Alsace we'll be staying, but probably among Metz, Strasbourg and Nancy. Any recommendations as to which city?

I haven't stayed in Metz or Nancy, but even in spring Strasbourg was pretty crowded. So in July and august, I am sure it will only be worse.

I would think that one week to get from Bordeaux to Alsace would be doable. check with ViaMichelin. Peter

Even if you have plenty of time to go from Bordeaux to Alsace Note that road traffic in July and August is very busy, especially on weekends. See the traffic forecast calendar for 2025 below:

https://www.bison-fute.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/Calendrier_Bison_fute_2025.pdf

France is divided into 6 zones from 1 to 6, and the expected traffic in 4 colors from green (usual traffic), to black (extremely difficult traffic).

And by the way, Metz and Nancy are not in Alsace but in Lorraine, there are some cultural differences, and avoid telling a Metz resident that he is Alsatian (and vice versa)

Thanks to both of you! Looks like we need to stay on top of traffic conditions.

do use the crazy buffalo schedule mentioned just above. It sounds loopy but it really is, and has been for many years, the official predictions and schedule of heavy long distance traffic. The website also provides real time updates.

Driving in France can be very easy (watch your speed) but on certain times it can be hellish. If the bison futé shows red or black in your direction in your region, take it seriously.

I am a genius at finding great little hotels for road trips when I plan ahead and a complete disaster doing it on the fly. Every time we tried to just find a place without reservations we ended up in a terrible place and sometimes were grateful to have found it. We had one trip where we were afraid we might end up sleeping in our car as we were turned away from half a dozen places on my list before we finally found a very dubious place with room. Our room was like a prison cell with a poured concrete bed platform with a foam mattress on it. It did have a very good restaurant. And we were not traveling in peak tourist season in July.

If you plan to do this, you should have a list of possible places and phone a day or two ahead as you go to reserve. You will be lucky to find openings, so have a long list.

I would identify some anchor spots along the way and plan two or three night stops to use as bases for the area. That way you also don't risk theft of your stuff at stops along the way as you can stow it at the hotel and then explore from there.
