Car travel Provence

We will be traveling, car rental, in Provence ( Cassis, Rousillion, Vaison la Romaine, and Arles,)late May 2017 and wish to know the best digital offline mapping apps. I'm familiar with Google maps, so has anyone used it there offline ? I also see there is CityMaps, Navfree, Waze, offMaps

We traveled those areas by car in September 2015 but brought our Garmin from home preloaded with French maps (as destination points) but the days of our GPS are limited. Currently the benefits are we can preload routes and set it to avoid tolls if we want a leisurely drive. We are going to rent a car in April and tour Brittany but this might be the last trip for our olr "old school" Garmin as mapping apps are catching up fast. While walking we use mapsme.

we drove around provence, using a gps, however we also make very good use of Pocket Earth, for off-line use and michelin paper maps.

gps's are generally only good if you know the name of your destination/s and what route it should ideally take you. whereas having a map digital or paper as well lets you know if you are heading the correct route.
there are lots of very small roads in that area and a gps and or google equivalent can take you down them, as they are seen as the 'best' route !!!
