Hope to travel France, late spring. It appears on Auto Europe auto rentals have doubled in price.
Previous 240/wk to 650 dollars.
Interesting. Is there a question somewhere or are you just alerting us?
I just booked a rental for a week mid-June midsize suv for $420 usd. - fyi
I just booked a 10 day rental directly of a four-door Renault Clio through Hertz for $529 total (less a bit of road tax). Looking back at my rentals for past years, it’s more expensive for sure.
Rental cars are more expensive, no doubt. Last November I reserved an economy sized car for 22 days in Spain for just over $600, excluding insurance. If I wanted to rent the same vehicle today for the same timeframe, it would be almost $1800. Glad I reserved when I did. That trip is coming up. My advice is to reserve a vehicle as early as possible once you know the dates of your trip. Funny thing is I thought $600 was a lot since it was 1/3 more than the last time I rented a vehicle is Spain. Now, I think it’s a bargain.
I have a 14 day rental from Europe Car Apr3-Apr18 Toulouse-Rennes $460. Booked through Autoeurope last week.
It is a mini manual. Brad
Hello,
Wow, I just looked. A mini manual no insurance (my favorite) is $30/day i March whether you rent for a week or 3 weeks. Same car in July is about $70/day.
A year into Covid I started watching car rental costs. I don't think I have ever rented for more than $20/day. That is with me supplying
the insurance not the car rental agency. I noticed that rentals took a large jump in price per day. to 40-50 dollars a day.
If you recall, Hertz and others, looked at Covid-19 and its affect on tourism and business travel, and quickly sold off large portions of their rental fleets. Auto manufacturers also cut back production and canceled orders for parts or didn't renew them. When it was time for a little recovery, Manufacturers found that parts manufacturers had taken other non-auto orders and they would have to wait in line for things like...computer chips. Car prices increased as demand exceeded supply.
The rental agencies saw demand start to pick up in their industry and found out that the usually deeply discounted new car prices they used to get from the manufacturers no longer existed.
So all in all, blame the unvaccinated who have tried to stretch this Covid thing out as long as they can. Will we ever return to normal for rental costs?

I’ve been looking at a medium sized automatic car in April.
Running about $75-$83 a day, vs $63 a day back in late fall of 2016.
More? Yes, but I anticipated even more.
Clear the cache in your browser, then check on a French site, and look for results in French. I'm not seeing any huge price increases (FYI, my usual car hire place is still between 5€ and 10€ a day + mileage as they were 2 years ago)
