Car touring in Provence

We’re staying in Avignon as a home base for 4 days in mid October. In his PROVENCE book - pg. 38 - Rick writes that, in this book, “he describes a variety of drives deep into the countryside.” I assume these would be similar to “city walks”…step-by-step descriptions of a day-long driving tour. Problem is, I can’t find these descriptions. Help???

Look for the Michelin Green Guide to Provence. That will be your best source for ideas, suggestions and sights and more. Even multi-day itineraries. If you don’t want to buy one, maybe you can borrow it from the library.

FWIW, in 1999 we drove from Munich to Avignon via Geneva (4 days with lots of stops; highlights approaching Avignon from the north were Mirmande, Mornas and Orange - we pretty much skipped over Chateaneuf du Papes wineries.). We spent a few days in Avignon and took a lovely day trip drive from there to Fontaine de Vaucluse, Gordes, Roussillon, and Bonnieux. From there, we went on to Lourmarin for dinner and back to Avignon for our last night there.

There are so many places to can drive south from Avignon. Down to Arles and the Camargue. To the southeast towards the Riviera, or the southwest to Gard, Les Baux and Nimes to the west in nearby Languedoc.

The Michelin Green Guide to Provence will really show you so much to feast your eyes upon as you plan.

I have been in Provence for almost a month and will be leaving Sunday the 31st. I have a Michelin map at home that I can send you if you'd like. I also have a lot of books on Provence that I got from a Foterite, which got me here in Provence a year later! PM it has been an incredible trip!

That is such a nice offer! Thanks. I have a couple of Michelin maps of Provence arriving soon, so I won't take you up on your kind offer.

Maps will be a big help. However, when I read that Rick laid out several car touring itineraries I was excited to take advantage. Apparently the Provence book doesn’t present those plans. We can put together our daily itineraries with the descriptions provided for each of the recommended areas. I was hoping for a step-by-step guide similar to one of Rick’s walking tour guides.
