Can anyone recommend a good car service in France?
For what exactly?
And where in France?
I would like to go from Mount Saint Michel to Tours.
I used to broker these services. Unless you find a mom and pop service locally, you are best searching for a private car service company based out of Tours. It’s going to be very expensive, at least $1.5K.
The company I worked for had a provider in Tours but I cannot remember their name.
I have used Daytrip multiple times, including in France. I used them to go from Bayeux to Versailles early one morning. That was pre-COVID. Prices have been quite a bit higher when I've checked recently the company recently relative to pre-COVID.
Thank you so much for this information!
Interestingly enough. I did a search on the DayTrip.com to go from Mont Saint Michel to Tours and it quoted 550 euros. Should I be concerned?
rc1austin,
I haven't done a car service, but for one way from city to city, think in terms of taking a taxi travelling 280 kilometers one way. He has to drive back empty. Think New York City to Annapolis, MD.
This will help you compare.
Looking on SNCFConnect, there are three trains a day, each with a couple of connections.
Two of the trains take 5.5 hours once you get to the Pontorson train station, 9 kilometers from Mont Saint Michel, so allow another half hour to get to the station.
You take three local trains, changing twice, no reserved seats,. Unless you are traveling on a vacation or weekend travel day, you should be able to get a seat. These trains stop at a lot of stations on the way. No food sold on local trains, but there are toilets. The one-way ticket is 25.40Euros.
Here's the route: Pontorson--> Rennes--> Angers--arrive Tours. You change trains in Rennes and Angers. This one has a tight connection in Angers.
Hours: 8:42 am from Pontorson---arrive 2:03 pm in Tours or leave at 1:41 pm---arrive 6:01 pm. Longer time to connect.
One TGV connections takes 7.5 hours, goes to Paris Montparnasse station. You have to get to the Austerlitz station for a TGV to Tours. Bus 91 does this or a taxi. Price: 54.80Euros. Hours: 6:14 pm, arriving in Tours at 1:36 am. If I chose this, I'd take an earlier train to Paris, sleep overnight, and take a TGV to Tours in the morning.
You have two extremely different choices to ponder.
If you can find a local company to do the trip, it would probably be at a better price than Daytrip.

That 2€/km quote you got from Daytrip is pretty good I think, since it translates to 1€/km one-way for the driver, a good 30% less than taxis.
I just did a dummy booking on Day Trip for April 15, 2025, and I was quoted $526 for the trip from MSM to Tours.
It's not cheap, but it's your money and your vacation.
I usually ask my hotel who they use, they always seem to know a company or a guy who knows a guy. Apparently taxi drivers will moonlight doing this sometimes. That is a long drive.
