We will be travel to Paris and Provence in August. We will take the train to Nimes and then rent a car when we arrive in Nimes. Do you have any recommendations for car rental agency in this area. National company vs European agency etc.

You'll find all the big worldwide car rental names in Nîmes, but no local ones really. Auto Europe is another worthwhile broker / comparison website. Find a price you like, then double check the reviews for that particular company, and its local agency. Some car rental companies such as Firefly and Goldcar have a bad reputation but you won't find them in Nîmes, so I wouldn't worry too much.
We are using AutoEurope again this summer. We too are renting a car in Nîmes. We are using Hertz. Get the no deductible insurance. Got a great rate. We did book six months ago.

I believe across the street from the station.
I always check them all then pick the one that works best for me. Last time in France I used Thrifty but I think others were Hertz.
