car rental question

So, long story short - I booked (Europcar through AutoEurope) a 9 pax van to be picked up at Orly & dropped off at Brussels. Decided to change it (for the drop off to be at Lille train station) to save the expensive drop off fee. I could not change it so that reservation was canceled and now Europcar is saying the van is not available (even though it shows available on AutoEurope's website). I checked out Booking, com ($654) and they are offering the van as well for a little less than AutoEurope. I have not received any confirmations from booking.com yet.

So, my question is has anyone rented a car in France through Booking.com? Did it work out ok?

Autoeurope's website is showing the same van available to be dropped off in Brussels. It's a little more than what I originally was going to pay ($751 with a $855 drop off fee).

So frustrating! Wish I hadn't changed my mind & kept what we originally had. :(

The salient point for others is - make the new reservation, then cancel the original- to avoid OP's situation.

Never done a car rental through booking, but Budget has 9 passenger vans ( manual) for Orly pick up and Lille drop off. Weekly rate varies from $850 to $1180 depending on the dates.

Is the booking.com price for all the same coverages, taxes and fees, that autoeurope shows?

If there’s a problem with the 3rd party reservation, it will need to be resolved through the 3rd party. That’s a good reason to rent directly from the vendor.

The issue may not be that a van is not available, rather, the drop off location. The rental company may have restrictions on where that size/type vehicle can be dropped.

Ditto what Joe said; make the new reservation before canceling the original one.

That's an interesting point. I just looked at a few drop off locations around the Lille train station & the van populates, but the 1 way fee is not listed. My guess is if it's not listed then the reservation won't go through. However, it's crazy to think none of the rental locations would take a van. But, what do I know.

We returned a car at Lille train station last year. It's a drop off center for all of the car rental agencies. It's located across from the station and you must drive down and down and down it's very tight turns. Maybe it can't handle a 9 passenger van. Or are you returning on a Sunday? That puts all sorts of restrictions and limitations on things.

Anyway, it may have nothing to do with it; but you never know.

Have you tried calling AutoEurope? They have a toll free number and are extremely knowledgeable and helpful

Call Autoeurope. They are very helpful and at the very least can explain the situation.

Don't know your travel dates, but of note I just rebooked my auto reservations for 7May. The rate has dropped nearly 30% from what I booked @ six weeks ago. This was direct from Sixt at CDG, but Auto Europe and Coscto (Enterprise) rates also declined a similar amount. Always good to check, but as noted don't cancel what you got until the new reservation is confirmed.

Well, I was able to rebook through Europcar but not having a drop off at the train station. There must be an issue with that drop off location. I did call autoeurope a couple times & they were not much help.

Thanks for being a sounding board!
