Car rental needed for trip from Bayeux to Loire Valley

Leaving Bayeux in September traveling to Loire Valley. We would like to rent a car to drive to Loire Valley. Would it be best to take the train to Caen, rent the car there and then drive to Loire Valley?

Yes. You will have more options in Caen as it is a bigger town. Watch for lunchtime and Sunday closures though, for pick-up and drop-off.

A car gives you some freedom for stops along the way (Le Mans is especially worthwhile), and it saves time (it would be my choice), but if your destination is near Tours and if you don't fancy the drive, there are direct trains from Caen to Tours taking about 3 hours.

Many might stop at MSM with the car. Have you driven in Europe? You may be disappointed how far many of the key sights are from the main highways. You're not going to make five memorable stops in a day of driving.

We took the train from Bayeux to Caen to pick up a car. Couldn't have been easier, rental offices visible from the station. Exit from town easy. Basically idiot proof. Brad

We picked up a car in Bayeux from Hertz. The pickup was at a gas station near the train station, very nondescript.
