We are planning to drive from Sancerre area to around Burgundy with a rental car. Then drop the car off where we picked it up.

Rental companies have very low drop fees or none at all to pick up one place and drop at another within the country. For this, you might look on AutoEurope.com, a consolidator based in Maine, or at the rental companies directly. You could drop in Dijon and take the train back to Paris or drop it at Orly airport on the outskirts of Paris and take metro #14 into Paris or a fixed-rate taxi to your Paris hotel.

Bourges is your closest larger town for getting a car at an agency that will allow a one-way rental.

Renting at the supermarkets can be more cost effective, but you must return the car to the same place. Some supermarkets, such as Carrefour, require a French license and can be processed only with an European credit card due to the security elements in the European cards.
