We will be in Paris for a few days before we head to Beaune for a week. Will be back in Paris at the airport for further travel. Would you suggest renting a car at the Paris airport or somewhere in Paris? There will be four of us and we are trying to find the easiest way to get from VRBO to rent car with luggage.
Are you referring to a VRBO in Paris or Beaune? Your question is a bit confusing. Please clarify when you want to have the car. It is not a good idea to have a car in Paris.
I too am confused by your question. I assume that you are not looking to have a car in Paris. Are you looking for the car to go from Paris to Beaune? If you are, I suggest that you take a train instead and rent the car in Dijon.
sorry for the confusion. We are flying to Paris and will be there for a few days before we go to Beaune for a week. There are four of us and two of our group, usually have lots of luggage. We were thinking it would be easier to just go to the airport to pickup a car rather than try to maneuver on the train. If it was just my husband and me we would take the train.
Does that help? I am trying to make it easy on all of us. I couldn't seem to find a car rental company on Saturday at the train station in Dijon - maybe I need to look again. Thank you all for your help
What time are planning to arrive in Dijon? The rental car companies (Sixt, EuropCar) at the train station are open on Saturdays until 5 though they do typically close for an hour in the middle of the day for lunch. If you decide to rent from Paris, there are car rental locations all over the city so it would help to know where you are staying in order to suggest the most efficient location. I would not go back to the airport to get the car.
Jhk,
Thank you. We are staying near Notre dame but don’t really want to drive in the city.
I will look at possibly renting in Dijon and taking the train however from what I see renting a car in Paris is cheaper than renting in Dijon and returning to Paris. Train for 4 people is added cost
If you do not want to drive in the city, I suggest picking up the car from Gare de Lyon. You will be generally in the right direction for heading to Beaune. It's not no city driving but it is maybe 2 to 3 kilometers before you are on Blvd Périphérique. My husband and I used to drive from Chalon-sur-Saone which is south of Beaune to Paris once or twice per week and the drive was never good; there was always a traffic issue. Finally, for one trip I convinced my husband to drive to Dijon and take the train from there and that was a game changer. Is there a way to reduce the amount of luggage? You might be surprised at how little luggage a car that seats four people will hold.
For the comfort and efficiency of all, I would try to convince the other two that their excess luggage will hamper everyone on a trip. It would be a shame to deal with the disadvantages of getting a car instead of taking the train to Beaune just because they need a lot of luggage. Plus, you will waste more time driving (vs a train) and whoever is driving will have that duty, possibly cutting into their enjoyment of the travel. Or just take the train and let them struggle schlepping their luggage on and off. (A good lesson!) (I know I sound harsh, but I have traveled with someone who had a hard time adapting to French dinner routines, and made each restaurant meal a bit of a bother, as they had to have their salad first, then often asked for changes to the food that they ordered.)
One other point....the typical French sedan which easily seats four people will not have room for excess baggage. Four carry-on sized bags in the way back (no trunks) will pretty much fill it up. You may need to scale up the car size (and price!) I wish you luck!
Puick upon a car at Orly? Fixed price taxi to Orly, and easier getting a car rental there.
I second the Orly suggestion. It is in the right direction to head towards Beaune. Be careful about amounts of luggage: European cars typically won't easily fit 4 checked suitcases.
Renting at Orly is a great idea - anything to avoid driving within Paris itself, which can be a nightmare.
I also second the recommendation to avoid overpacking. A rental car or minivan that’s big enough to accommodate four people plus large amounts of luggage might be too large to comfortably maneuver in parking garages and other tight spots.
Anyway, the cost of the rental, insurance, taxes, gas, tolls, and parking might negate the cost savings of taking a car vs. the train.
Acutor is correct about the costs of car rental and associated expenses vs train cost. You may have to pay for parking even at your lodging in Beaune, and if for some reason you have a car in Paris, parking is very, very expensive, and likely not near your hotel.
I reiterate, fitting your bags in a regular size French car will be impossible if you have more than four carry-on bags. And a larger car will be harder to drive in many small towns, and fit in parking spaces. You will not save much money, if any, by getting a car in Paris. I highly suggest you try to get your other travelers to packed more lightly and plan on some laundry during the trip. Beaune will have some laundromats, I am sure, or laundry services if they want to pay for that.
Good luck.
