Car rental in Nice airport or city

This coming September I plan to arrive at NCE from Paris, spend 2-3 nights in the city, then travel west into Provence, ending at NCE eight days after arrival. I assume it would be best to travel from NCE into the city by shuttle and visit Nice and nearby environs by public transportation, then pick up a rental car in the city and return it at the airport. Is this the best strategy, or am I overlooking something? We are two people traveling. I have been to Nice before, but my companion has not. Thanks for any guidance.

The only problem I can foresee is that the range of cars available at the city office may be smaller. If you have a more precise requirement, such as a particular size or type of gearbox, then you might find it is unavailable on the day.
