I am hoping to rent a car in Amboise instead of Tours. I have not found a car rental place in Amboise, even after trying the sites mentioned in the RS guidebook. I am asking if anyone has experience renting a car in Amboise, from which company, and through which specific website?
Google maps shows a few independent rental companies. Have you tried the Autoeurope website? Also, you can contact your lodging and seek their advice.
Amboise is a town of 12,000 people, and most families own their own car. You used to be able to rent cars from Intermarché supermarket (near the station) and Europcar (on the far side of town) but neither do cars these days. I think Intermarché still rent utility vehicles.
I think it was just uneconomical for companies to hold vehicles just in case.
Amboise is very small. Even if there were a rental car location there, it would likely not have cars with automatic transmissions and most tourists do not like or may not be able to drive standard transmissions.
The location most likely to have what you want is St Pierre des Corps, the Tours TGV station.
Blois also has car rental offices right across from the station.

That's where I returned my car to back in 1999 (I think I rented through AutoEurope). I got horribly lost trying to find the station as I kept trying to find it in the city and finally figured out it was at St Pierre des Corps. That was pre-GPS, though, and I was trying to rely on a map with my 20 year old daughter as the navigator. I'm sure you wouldn't have any problems today. :)
FYI, I did fine using trains and some local bus service from a base in Amboise. I'm speaking of visiting the various chateaus in the Loire Valley and Tours. Amboise is a great base. Nice bike paths along the Loire also. We encountered people who were going town to town via bike.
