Car rental at CDG

My husband and I will be needing to rent a car at CDG this September for a 10 day driving trip then returning to CDG. I have no idea what company is most reliable. Europcar....Avis or Hertz or other. I would appreciate any and all suggestions! Thank you

I have used all of those companies plus Sixt in France. Avis charged us a one-way rental fee and so did Hertz. Sixt and Europcar have not. Given that you plan to return the car to CDG, I don't think it matters which one you use. I have not found any real difference in reliability. They all had cars and the cars worked. The longest I ever waited in a line at an airport, not counting immigration at Newark was the wait I had in 2013 at a Hertz counter in CDG. Consider making your reservation through AutoEurope.

Hi from Wisconsin,
I have rented from different organizations when I have landed in Germany or France. I had good luck with all of them. The reviews tend to be from people who had or think they had a problem. The good experiences seldom show up in written form.

I agree with the previous responder. Start with Autoeurope. They are a search engine for car rentals. They do a good job.

However, while I have had good luck with everyone, Europecar is really quite the organization. Get a bid from Autoeurope and then phone Europecar. I have had great experiences with their phone personnel. And while in Europe I have, on occasion when they aren't busy, walked up to one of their counters and asked for help. Help about anything. They have jumped right in. And they have excellent English language skills.

Then...most rental agreements allow you to cancel up to 48 hours before the start of the rental date. Lock in a rate that is good today. Make sure it is cancelable for any reason. Then go back on a regular basis (every couple weeks) and do another search. Rates do fluxuate. One January I was able to nab a special St. Valentine's Day rate. Who knew. Sign the new rate agreement. Then cancel the old one.

Then you are faced with auto insurance. For me, their daily insurance price is more than the daily rental rates I have captured. So I use a credit card that offers free insurance for the first 30 days of a rental. That means I have to get a police report at any accident I participate in. Only once have I had to do this. It was a long rental, 28 days, in the Czech Republic shortly after the wall came down. No one spoke English. I had the shattered window replaced at an Opel dealership. Kept the papers and submitted everything to the card company. I got a check in the mail in about 10 days.

Enjoy,

We've had good dealings with Gemut.com. I don't think their rates are the lowest, but they are straightforward about issues (such as the current rental-car shortage) and they offer 24/7 English language support by phone wherever you are.
