I'm thinking of renting a car in Annecy for a day, to go to some of the sights along the lake. Or is the bus service all I'd need? Thinking of the castle St.B and maybe some nice walk.

If you're in reasonably good shape, you should be fine w/o a car. Bus service is good along the lake, on both sides. We've stayed in Annecy a few times w/o a car, and managed just fine, seeing towns on both sides of the lake. We walked to some of the towns, and took buses to others. The only tricky place might be Chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. We had taken a bus to Menthon then started to walk towards the chateau. We got a very good view, but the walk seemed like it was going to be much longer than it initially seemed, so we turned around.
