Car or Train March 2026 4 adults and 9 year old

Hello frllow travelers!
Looking for recommendations. We are taking a family trip to France in March 2026: 3 young seniors, 1 adult and 1 nine year old. We will be in Paris (11th Arron.), Amboise, Mt St Michel and back to Paris.
We are thinking of driving so we can easily visit Chateaus near Amboise.
Which car renal company do you recomend? Do you recommend car rental from Paris, or train to Amboise and then rent the car for remainder of trip?
Appreciate your help!

Recommend you train to St Pierre des Corps station (Tours) and rent there. We used Sixt.. There are several car rental agencies just outside the station. Have a look at AutoEurope to see which agencies are there and the type of vehicles that are available. Take into consideration the amount of luggage as well as the number of passengers. Don't forget to have an IDP for each driver. You could look at dropping the car in Rennes after Mont St Michel and train back to Paris. Take note that many agencies are closed on Sundays and close early on Saturday. Also may be closed for lunch.

Also be aware of car size in regard to the comfort of the three people in back, as well as sufficient room for luggage. The suggestions on rental sites will say x number of people and x number of bags, but I find that it is very optimistic. In 2023 there were seven family members and we of course needed two cars, but at the end of the trip, 3 adults and two kids (9 and 12), with 5 small carry-ons and each with a small personal item took a 3 1/2 hour drive to Bordeaux to catch their plane. It was in a family sized sedan but was very squished! Do take a train from Paris and rent your car in whichever location you arrive at first (Mt. St. Michel or Amboise) and take the train back to Paris. The drive between Amboise and Mt St Michel says 3 hrs 9 mins, but that doesn't figure in time to get gas, eat, use the facilities, or stop to see something that caught your interest.

Just be sure to get a car that is comfortable enough.

Also, I concur that you should go to AutoEurope to compare various rental co mpanies offerings.
