Hi
We are going to be there for 2 days later this month. We plan to just visit the various markets and not necessarily travel to other villages. Do we need a car? We are a family of 4 (kids aged 11 and 9).

Colmar's a small town, no need for a car.

Two days? So one overnight? You won't need a car. You can walk most of Colmar's tourist/market area in a couple hours. If you want something different just hop a train or shuttle. You really do not want to pay for parking.

We rented a car in Colmar to be able to visit the villages and Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle, and to continue our trip on to Chamonix. Parking wasn't an issue, found an underground garage very close to our apartment in Colmar. It won't be cheap, however. And if you really do mean you'll only be in Colmar part of two days (one night), then you won't have time for road trips anyway. Just stick to the train.
