I have started using some cannabis with THC for pain and sleep, just at night,, in the form of gummies and oil. I have researched and discovered that cannabis is not allowed in France to buy and sell. Does anyone know if it would be allowable for me to already have it in my luggage entering from the US? Or would it be discovered at airport and confiscated and then I could potentially be in trouble with the French government? I'm not sure how to interpret the French law concerning this. Thank you.
If you are caught ( the French have sniffer dogs, too), then it's not just possession you have to worry about, but illegal importation. Do you feel lucky? Do you?
I'd say it is a VERY BAD IDEA unless you have explicit and very clear knowledge that it is allowed.
I'm all for using gummies for pain and sleep - where it is clearly legal so you aren't ending up stuck at a border entry and needing to buy a return flight home after spending hours trying to convince French/EU immigration folks an internet forum group told you it was fine.
Get an official prescription; you know it is illegal to fly with recreational marijuana in the USA from Oregon and the TSA might have you arrested either at the boarding gate or on the jet bridge or on the plane. Too risky not worth it.
I think all that needs to be said to the OP's question is no, don't consider it. It could turn out really badly.
It’s illegal.
No no no no no no no no no no no no no. [face palm emoji]
NO. :-)
You might go to Amsterdam where it's legal on a day trip and toke up there if the pain is too much or you get insomnia but it is illegal to have it in France.
FYI from Rick Steves

THC is currently illegal both in France and on international flights departing from the U.S.
The last time I was at LAX, after going through security
with the machines, the last checkpoint had departing passengers walk through a gauntlet of sniffing dogs on leashes held by their human officers.
Not worth the risk.
You likely will be caught.
Various products that might be of use to you were available for purchase in a shop in Chamonix/Mont Blanc. I haven't shopped elsewhere in France however. So illegal? Hmmmm. Could have been hemp derived but is that illegal in France?
Trying to take illegal drugs across a border may make it impossible for you to travel internationally for years -- maybe always. Everything is electronic now -- your passport records will be marked forever. Don't risk it.
In France, possession of cannabis, even in small quantities, is considered a crime. Only products containing only CBD are authorized.
Since September 2020, a fixed fine has been introduced for possession of small quantities. The police officer who arrests you can choose to immediately issue a €200 fine or prosecute you.
It goes without saying that in an airport, which is a transit point for illegal substances, this simplified procedure could turn into police custody and a very unpleasant full search.
One note. Someone suggested getting a prescription. Keep in mind that that prescription will not do anything to keep you out of trouble. If a drug is illegal in another country, the fact that you have a prescription in the United States is not relevant.
That's why Benji mailed himself a package to their hotel in A Real Pain.
Don't do that either.
would it be discovered at airport and confiscated and then I could potentially be in trouble with the French government?
Yup.
Hopefully your doctor can prescribe something that will help and be legal in France.
You might go to Amsterdam where it's legal
Cannabis isn't legal in The Netherlands either. Decriminalised, but not legal.
Not allowed, even with a prescription.
THC-free CBD is legal, though.
Obviously the answer to the OP is, "Don't do it." With that being said, I find the legal status of weed in Europe to be even more confusing and convoluted than it is in the US. It's illegal in Italy, yet the skunky telltale smoke is everywhere in Bologna and even in Puglia, with ostensible cannabis vending machines. And I'm seeing cannabis shops in France, though I'm not sure they're not just selling CBD without any THC.
I'm so glad I never acquired this habit.
THC-free CBD is legal, though.
donnas, I've seen shops that sell THC-free CBD in both England and France. I would suggest that you research where they are, and then purchase a small amount while you are there. Then when you are ready to return home, just discard the rest safely. That way you don't run the risk of getting in trouble for flying with an illegal substance.
I too have resorted to gummies for sleep but thought it unwise to bring to Europe. I recommend getting a doctors script. for ambien (or generic). I started using this 4 years ago for my first 3 days in Europe ( on the plane I took 1/2). I rarely use it otherwise unless I have had 3 sleepless nights. Not sure why I'm adverse to taking it more, no side effects or lingering effects in morning Also, in my search for sleep I found that melatonin did help (5mg).
I travel with Ambien as well because it is useful in adjusting to jet lag when you are exhausted but can't sleep the first or second night, but haven't used it the last few trips. The reason for not using it often is that it is quickly useless. It is great for very short term use if you don't have side effects, but it stops being effective with over use.

It is. It's a real mish-mash of laws, with no real continuity across the EU.

I had to look up status in Italy. I'll link to an article I found. Decriminalised it seems. The vending machines are selling some sort of low-THC hemp things. Probably not what you smell people smoking in the street.

Definitely still illegal for recreational use in France, so a no go for the average visitor.
Thank-you all, so much, for your replies! I definitely will NOT be packing ANY cannabis at all to Europe after reading all of your answers! I will find some other sources for the pain and sleep issue. I still have five weeks before the trip. thanks so much, all!
hey hey donnas
yeah yeah, good decision
