Husband and I had a trip to the Dordogne region of France scheduled for last year, May 2020, that was rescheduled for this May 2021 that now looks like it will be rescheduled AGAIN. We are both retired and ready to take advantage of our time to get back on the road again.....only to amiss another beautiful May being at home......such a wonderful time to travel that we are again seeing pass us by.......hopefully a trip to Switzerland in this September will be possible and we can enjoy international travel again! Both of us are vaccinated and have had Covid.......so ready for this all to be over!
I am sorry Jane, I know it is disappointing.
Sorry to hear this Jane. It’s a constant reminder to us to about our many ideas for travel and narrowing time to travel. We have been making domestic plans with flights for the past month. We’ll see if even these trips can happen, we’re very hopeful.
So Sorry! We've cancelled our Xmas Market River Cruise for Dec 2021 also and postponed it to 2022. I'm a Nurse and was vaccinated in December -- unfortunately, when it comes down to opening the borders and us getting into the EU again, it isn't going to be about how well the USA is doing - it's going to be about how well the EU and the rest of the world is doing and unfortunately, they are way behind on vaccinations - so it's not looking hopeful for the Summer - it is 'possible' by the late Fall, but we aren't sure we want to be the first ones over there when the borders do open as we don't want all the restrictions and closures that will most likely be happening as the borders first open. We HATE to wait, but we also don't want to spent so much money and not do what we LOVE when we are there. We have booked a trip to Jackson Hole for December to make up for our missed Xmas Market trip - we usually go to Europe every other December for 3 weeks. We also pushed our Sept. Switzerland trip from 2021 to 2022. We are so lucky to live in the USA where we are getting vaccinated -- I feel bad for those who aren't as fortunate as us. These are first world problems for sure as most other citizens rarely even leave their continent. Here's hoping for open borders with less restrictions for 2022.
There are a lot of moving parts to the story of when travel can commence again in earnest. Sure, the domestic and host country vaccination stats are a big part of it as chinalake mentioned, but also, when will insurance companies lift their Covid exclusions, when will the domestic re-entry conditions be lifted, when will it be socially acceptable to travel?
Insurance companies, most employers are highly risk averse, and I believe they will be among the last to turn around their thinking.
I'm perpetual optimist, but think there's a long way to go.
I understand your feelings exactly, Jane. I, too, am retired and had a trip cancelled. I want to spend 3 or 4 weeks in northern Italy but the clock is ticking on whether we'll get to travel or, if enough time passes, my health may not be up to international travel. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and for me.
Chiming in to agree and commiserate. Being in our "golden years" we too are uncomfortably conscious of the passing of time. We're thankful for all the Rick Steves videos, Facebook pages for the places we'd like to visit, and other online resources for taking an armchair vacation every few days.
I cancelled two trips last year. One to France, one domestic (DC). But I ended up renting an RV for a Civil War history trip last summer instead. Now I have another trip to Paris/Normandy fully planned and reserved for this June. But I am simultaneously planning a domestic trip renting an RV in the states to hedge my bets. I would prefer Normandy, but dead last on the list is going nowhere this summer. Keep the faith!
This darn Covid virus has ruined so many travel plans for so many people worldwide. I had to cancel 6 trips last year. One, an African Safari, one to Poland with RS and 4 domestic with either friends or family. The Africa trip was originally set for June 2020, rescheduled for June 2021 and just rescheduled for June 2022. Whenever I find myself getting too depressed or upset about it, I just remind myself that cancelling vacations and trips is really a first world problem. It helps me to think this way.
It’s true that Europe is closed, well, except Iceland.
There are countries that are open and welcome tourists! Go, travel! It may not be Europe, but you can still travel. Just today CDC, says vaccinated people are at low risk to travel.
Thank you all for your kind replies. I know how blessed I am to have a healthy husband after a horrendous Covid bout a year ago.....and I know how blessed we are that we can have our vaccines and still physically go.......just miss it so......you all are so understanding and I thank you for listening!
Ugh, I know! My 2020 trip and 2021 trip were canceled. Hoping for May 2022. Paris, here I come!
Look at the bright side, Franklin, TN is a pretty nice place in which to be stuck!
Croatia is doing more forth, than back and is open to US citizen tourists if the conditions there are sufficient for you to enjoy (but I kinda think that will improve in the coming months too) https://www.koronavirus.hr/recommendations-and-instructions-for-crossing-the-state-border/736
I didn't even bother trying to replan anything this year. I laugh now that last year in June I was thinking I could fly to Alberta and BC for a few weeks in September.
I'm lucky that my husband retired last year, so when things finally open up, we will do two trips overseas within probably 6 months.
If our Atlantic bubble holds over the summer, maybe will finally get around to visiting Newfoundland...and maybe...a little piece of France...?

Jane.....we feel your disappointment. We are coming to realize we were being overoptimistic thinking we just might be able to travel to see family in Haute Savoie during July. This will be the second time to cancel also. We also have used the reminder to ourselves that this is a first world problem. We are healthy, safe, and vaccinated. We count our blessings and have decided to visit some western National Parks this summer - as many other people are doing. This too shall pass. We have all just become very impatient and fatigued.
Thank you for your encouragement......we are SO BLESSED and know it......just hate seeing the beauty of Europe on these websites and watch another home bound May slip by!
